Dr. Norm Whan- Chairman of the Board

Dr. Norm is the Founder and Chairman of the Board ofCanning Hunger and Church Growth Development International.  He is the Author of “Canning Hunger thru Neighborhood Connections”, “The Phone’s for You!”, and “Keeping in Touch” and has developed “Box of Love” and “Home Team Volunteers” into leading national ministries.

“Canning Hunger” has spread to all 50 states, has had over 400,000 people participate in neighborhood food collection routes, serving over 4,000 agencies and provided millions of meals to hungry kids and their families in the United States. “Box of Love” has become one of the largest single Thanksgiving feeding projects in America, providing a complete holiday meal for over 50,000 families annually.

“Home Team Volunteers” has provided over 600,000 volunteer days and over 5,200,000 hours of work for men and women in transitional living.  Home Team Volunteers has donated over $50,000,000.00 to their transitional living partners.

​

In 2002, Canning Hunger was honored by Disneyland as the top social service agency in Southern California for their service to the least, the last, the lost, and the left-out.

​

“Church Growth Development International” was founded by Dr. Norm in 1985 and his materials called “The Phone’s for You!” have been used by multiple denominations to plant and grow nearly 32,000 churches in the United States.  Dr. Norm has trained over 35,000 pastors on 5 continents from 52 different countries.

​

Norm has appeared on numerous TV and radio programs and has been written about in hundreds of newspapers, Time Magazine, Christianity Today, Ministries Today, Global Church Growth, Megatrends, and many other national and international publications.  His work has earned him a place in the prestigious “Who’s Who in Religion”, “Who’s Who in America”, and “Who’s Who in the World”.

Scott Whan- President

 

Scott Whan has served with Canning Hunger in many capacities since his college days in the early 90’s. In 2006, he joined Canning Hunger full time and was unanimously selected to be the President of the organization in 2009. While providing oversight, leadership, and support for many Canning Hunger programs, he spends a majority of his time as the National Director of Home Team Volunteers. Scott is proud to have helped launch, nurture, and develop Home Team Volunteers into one of the most influential programs of its kind in the America. Scott is excited to dedicate a life of ministry to helping the poor and disadvantaged while also engaging the community in caring for their neighbors in need.

​

Scott’s entire professional career has been spent in non-profit and social services. He has held pastoral positions at Rose Drive Friends Church in Yorba Linda, CA and Old Towne Community Church in Orange, CA. He served as the Principal of Light and Life Christian School where he was also on the pastoral staff for Light and Life Christian Fellowship in Long Beach, CA. He also proudly served on the Administrative staff of the YMCA of Orange County Community Services Branch.

In 1995 Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Mid America Nazarene University via four years of study at  European Nazarene Bible College in Switerland. In 1998, he received his Master of Divinity degree from Haggard Graduate School of Theology- Azusa Pacific University.

​

Many experiences have shaped Scott’s life and career. He has been blessed with patient and generous mentors such as: Dr. Dwight D. Swanson, Dr. Gayle Beebe, Dr. Larry Walkemeyer, Dr. C.W. Perry, and his father, Dr. Norm Whan. Nothing has contributed to his life more than his faith and his family. Scott and his wife Ramona and 2 children live in Wildomar, California.
